XR Wandsworth are organising a mass cycle ride and rally on Saturday 23rd August. This family-friendly ride will be protected by stewards front and back.

We will have a great line up of speakers at the rally, including:

  • Veena Aggarwal, a GP in Battersea and co chair of the Royal College of GPs climate and sustainability group
  • Carolyn Axtell, Parklets Campaign Manager, Possible
  • Daisy, age 16 and founder of Generation 1.5
  • Celia Duncan, Wandsworth Cycling Campaign Coordinator
  • Sharon Erdman, Volunteer Coordinator, Mums for Lungs
  • Rika Frischling, Balham Climate Action
  • David James, joint coordinator of the South West London Greenpeace group and a committed Greenpeace activist
  • Pete Knapp, an air quality scientist and journalist
  • Maurice Mcleod, anti-racism activist, social commentator and Labour Councillor for Queenstown Battersea
  • Joe Taylor, the Green Party parliamentary candidate for Battersea in the  2004 General Election

The aim is to highlight how the rise of SUVs and car spreading – also known as autobesity! – is choking our streets and our future, and the need for safe cycling infrastructure and car-free streets.

The ride will meet at 10:30am for an 11am start at the North East car park in Battersea Park close to Chelsea Bridge (Parking lot, Carriage Drive North, SW11). If for any reason you can’t make it to the Battersea Park meet-up point, you could join us along the route by the railway bridge on Wandsworth Common at 11.15. The ride will end at about 12pm at Garratt Lane Old Burial Ground opposite Southside Shopping Centre where we will have a rally, outreach and speakers.

The mass cycle ride is a great way to take direct, visible action in our own community – and it's open to everyone, young and old, whether you are experienced riders or cycle-curious. People who can’t take part in the cycle ride can join us at the end of the ride for outreach and speeches.
